  • Proposed that the CARDS B05 committee members work with B05 to get the pipe installed on the South Pole to CARDS advantage for PRS & 23cm.
  • It was decided we should turn on the old PRS repeater.

November 2019

  • Insurance awaiting response from Airways coverage amount required.
  • The motion was put that we pay the first years insurance from funds and then will have to fundraise for subsequent years.
  • The Christmas BBQ is to be held at Mike ZL3MIKE’s QTH midday on the 15th of December.
  • CARDS equipment should be retrieved from Paul Layt and the weather station from Andrew Sands.
  • A discussion was held on putting a web cam at Marley’s.
  • There was a discussion on smart goals.
  • Craig is to pursue a Bunnings BBQ fundraiser and report back to the February meeting.

October 2019

  • All repeaters at CASS are operating correctly. 840 Hardware is with Doug ZL3DMH to re-installation back at Marley’s Hill, Mike to contact Keith re access to site. With the 23cm repeater now licensed (30 watts) work toward the installation at Marley’s hill can begin. The equipment will require 2U of rack space. Mike advised that he has a length of LD5/50 coax that he can donate for the feedline to the antenna that is to be mounted on the lower pole.
  • Mike proposed that the CARDS apply to the Rata Foundation for $7000.00 for the purchase of the cavity filters, a component required for the installation a PRS repeater to be located at Marley’s hill.
  • CARDS will provide all other equipment required for the installation which includes a 4 dipole phased array antenna with a value of $6500.00 donated by Mike Stubberfield.
  • Mike thanked those members who assisted him to erect his tower on the 12th October.
  • The new WEB site is taking shape with changes to the banner fonts and other gradual changes.
    Ideas from other members included enlarging pictures with a click and the addition of links to useful Amateur Radio programs.
    Craig is having issues getting the correct contact details in for organising a fundraising BBQ at Bunnings but will persevere.
  • Tony advises that the proposed remote receiver site at Waipara is currently on hold as broadband at the site is yet to be installed.
  • Doug ZL2BCF will look into preparing a condensed history of Amateur repeaters at Cass Peak as time allows.

September 2019

  • Mike to confirm the quotes and Doug will prepare a motion to be voted on at the October meeting to apply to Rata foundation for funding of the cavity filters for a PRS to be located at Marley’ Hill.
  • Stubby is looking for 6 volunteers to assist him to erect his tower on the 12th October.
  • The new WEB site is functional and Paul has some ideas to enhance it that he wishes to implement. Ideas from other members included enlarging pictures with a click and the addition of links to useful Amateur Radio programs.
  • Craig suggested raising funds by running a BBQ at Bunnings and will investigate.
  • Doug ZL2BCF is to look into preparing a condensed history of Amateur repeaters at Cass Peak.

August 2019

  • All repeaters at CASS Peak operating correctly.
  • Some IRLP interference during the Sunday night net every week.
  • 840 Hardware is with ZL3DMH being tested ready to go back.at Marleys.
  • ZL3TMB is working on DTMF decoding for repeater remote control. 850 Echo link is quite busy – mainly 2 locals.

Public liability insurance coverage for CARDS members: ZL3TMB has proofed letter for NZART.

  • Marley’s Hill B05 have planned pole Maintenance for Oct/Nov to add a 6m length of scaffold pipe to help our antenna mounting.
  • 1296 – License ZL3TMB being a little slack (His words).

Funding PSR : As part of the application for funding PRS Quotes have been sourced by CH5311. CH5311 to discuss with funding applications with ZL3TOY. Funding is to be sought from funding providers for the purchase of cavity filters and batteries as part of a PRS (public radio service) repeater to be located at Marley’s Hill in the port hills above Christchurch. The purpose of this repeater is to improve emergency radio communications between 4 wheel drive vehicles and other emergency services during civil emergencies.

  • Waipara was suggested by ZL3TVP as a location for a SDR installation, he will investigate further and report back.
  • The CARDS group is to revert to monthly general meetings.
  • ZL3CAR and QRZ domain passwords to be determined ZLTMB & ZL2BCF.

June 2019

Public liability insurance coverage for CARDS members:

  1. ZL2BCF to write a formal letter to NZART HQ inquiring about CARDS members who are also NZART members being covered by the NZART public liability insurance while working on equipment located at CASS Peak and Marley’s Hill.
  2. Application to Branch 05 for coverage if option 1 is declined or any of the conditions are too onerous.
  • The 840 repeater is to be reinstalled in its previous location at Marley’s Hill if possible.

Possible future project ideas:

  1. Remote camera at Marley’s Hill.
  2. 23cm mesh network.

  • FM10 – 23cm 1293 ready to go.
  • 840 Marleys with Doug Hart for MMDM setup.
  • A free and frank discussion was held about public liability insurance and its implications for repeater operations at CASS peak. The committee are to investigate possible options and report back to the June meeting.
  • ZL3TMB advised the issues including cost of migrating from Yahoo to IO groups but will seek guidance from others who have gone down this path.

  • Site visit to Marleys had been made and T800 gear installed, fed via higher antenna with reasonable report from users.
  • 840 Power supply has been replaced, VK3TIM to upgrade firmware.
  • 23cm repeater ZL3TMB to progress license.
  • ZL2BCF to inquire through NZART status of NZART insurance for CARDS and members who are also members of B05.
  • Discussion if we should migrate to IO groups or the secretary to have a DB backed up on line.

PRS repeater for Marley’s: Site visit to investigate installation possibilities.

August 2018

  • The PRS repeater at Marley’s need investment in batteries and Antenna infrastructure.
  • ZL3TMB proposed that we make a grant application to the Rata Foundation to purchase the equipment required for the PRS installation at Marley’s hill.

June 2018

  • Cass Peak temporary repair in pace for 6m repeater with all repeaters operational.
  • Incorporated societies register details updated.
    Craig suggested changing message distribution from Yahoo – to be investigated.

February 2018

  • Cass Peak site visit to address H&S concerns over the 6m antenna. ZL3TOY to design & build an alternative replacement antenna.
  • 840 Marleys repeater went silent over the weekend of the 17-18th February.
  • ZL3TMB has contacted Greg Smith at Tait for a possible retrieval, repair, service and reinstall. Greg has stated that he’s busy and also that he is looking to retirement in 1-1.5 years so may not be available in the future.
  • ZL3TMB has asked if other Amateurs within Tait could be site certified so that access could be continued.
  • Mike would also like to explore the option of (re)setting up a Tait RF engineering link so that the repeater could be maintained remotely. Ongoing.
  • In the meantime, ZL3TMB asked ZL3LF, whom hosts the Echolink node, to retune onto 850 for continued use, which has been done.
  • CH5311 was keen to know the progress of the PRS repeater?
  • As it is at the moment we have a PRS2 Narrow Licence, radio gear and at least one antenna. Recent quotes needed for RFI and IK Telecom cavity sets for possible funding application to either Lotteries or perhaps the Tait radio fund (ask Rory about this as they fund Radiotek).
  • CARDS apply to _ for the purchase of repeater cavity filters for the PRS2 repeater.
  • ZL3AAZ asked that ZL3AB be recognized for his
    service to CARDS as Treasurer and an original founding member with a letter of thanks and Honorary Life Membership.

November 2017

  • 6m repeater ZL3TMB to progress antenna issue.
  • PRS – ZL3TMB is to obtain costings for antennas, filter, batteries and feeder.
  • ZL2BCF is to prepare a grant application based on the requirements and costings from above.

  • Awaiting the 6M/2M antenna for Cass Peak from ZL3MJS.
  • PRS repeater license came to a halt after the first step Signals
    Technology Solutions had installed and licensed a PRS repeater up the hill but as they no longer required were happy to hand over the license to Cards – ZL3TMB to manage change.
  • ZL3TMB has retrieved the repeater spares from Branch 56 they will be stored a ZL2BCF’s place.

April 2017

  • 6/2 m antenna to be constructed for Cass Peak by Hitech at a cost of $50 to $60.
  • It was decided to get a PRS repeater license.
  • It was decided that the AGM will be held at the August meeting.
  • ZL3TMB was looking for someone to accompany him to conference and will ask on the area net as there were no takers.

February 2017

  • ZL3TMB to deliver IRLP node to ZL3MJS for operation from his QTH.
  • A complement had been received on the operation of Echo Link.
  • AGM date ZL3TMB to talk to ZL2BCF .
  • ZL2BCF is to ask ZL3AB for the number of current financial members.
  • Doug ZL2BCF to investigate the minimum number of members required for an incorporated society.

November 2016

  • The 6m antenna was replaced on 12/11 with a tri-band antenna with the 2m port being used for the Tekapo link.
  • St Andrews – No response yet ZL3MJS to contact.
  • The first Bi-monthly meeting will be held in November.
  • The November meeting will include a presentation by Mark ZL3AB on the VK9NZ Dxpedition to Norfolk Island.

September 2016

  • It was decided that if a solution for the 6m antenna was not available for the next meeting that a high gain antenna be purchased.
  • Mark advised that the CQ Worldwide SSB contest was to be held on the 29th of October.
  • St Andrews – Mike advised that there had been an initial meeting with the college which included Simon their technical person and that the meeting was positive. The college will need to discuss the matter with Simon’s support being critical in our proposal proceeding.
  • The first Bi-monthly meeting will be held in November will include a presentation by ZL3AB on the VK9NZ Dxpedition to Norfolk Island.

August 2016

Repeaters: no known issues.

  • It was decided that any antenna for 6m be explored.
  • ZL3TOY agreed to research 6m antennas and bring his proposal to the next meeting.

There was good discussion on the aims and future of CARDS.
Some of the points raised were:

  1. What should we be doing/achieving.
  2. Frequency and nature of meetings.
  3. Are we duplicating what a branch provided and what was the difference.

Alternate meetings between :

  1. A speaker.
  2. Show and tell.
  3. Social gathering.
  • Suggestions for future proofing access to Cass Peak repeaters.
  • Occasional visits to member’s shacks and/or to associated industries.
  • It was proposed that we move to bi-monthly meetings, starting on September.
  • Formal meetings will be only when required.
  • ZL3AB offered to give his presentation on the Norfolk Island trip at the November meeting.
  • The suggestion that meetings be bi-monthly will be put to members and their response will be considered at the September meeting.

July 2016

  • Reports from users of 680 that they have no problem.
  • The aims and purpose of CARDS and its future were discussed.
  • ZL3AB pointed out that new regulations for charitable status come into force in September and present membership would not meet quorum requirement.
  • Future maintenance of and access to repeaters is not guaranteed indefinitely.
  • The question of winding up will need the input and consent of all members and will be the topic for CARDS next general meeting.

June 2016

ZL3TMB’s gave a presentation on smart meters. This was of great interest to the group.

May 2016

  • All going. ZL3MJS will contact ZL3OZ of South Canterbury Branch. re improving the 680 signal.
  • Uses of Godley Head were discussed and Mark will liaise with those concerned to arrange a meeting to look at the site, and suggesting dates for anticipated upcoming contests.
  • Queens Birthday NZART Conference was discussed.

April 2016

  • One of the new set of brackets has been installed at Cass Peak for the 5625 and 850 repeaters the other will be mounted on the next trip for the link Tekapo receiver. This will also be used for the 6m repeater after the antenna has been constructed.
  • There have been complaints about 840 and a trip will be needed to Marley’s Hill when possible to investigate.
  • ZL3TMB spoke about the possibility of moving echo link to ZL3MJS’s QTH. Some discussions on how remote HF could be achieved if success was had with Godley Head.

March 2016

  • Brackets have been built and are ready to go up, probably this coming weekend, also a ceiling flange to tidy the cable. ZL3TMB needs cable length information. Poles on Marleys Hill have been checked and an engineer’s report is awaited. Form 10 needed for 23cm.
  • IRLP was off on 6th March for an event.
  • ZL3CU asked about activity in the Lee Jennings ‘contest’ and if there was anything further on the Christchurch city council submissions.
  • ZL3TMB has offered to talk about Smart meters at a future meeting and ZL3CU explored the possible use of the clubrooms for talks by related organizations’ speakers.

February 2016

  • Cass Peak check and maintenance was carried out before Christmas, thanks to ZL2BCF who reports it now looks more professional. ZL3MJS to action the hardware for the 6m/2m antenna.
  • There was brief discussion re 2m and 6m antennas.
  • Field day was discussed. CARDS is not manning a station this year but members may join with other branches.
  • Aims and activities for the year ahead were discussed.
  • St Andrews and Beltana depend upon permission.
  • Godley Head possibility to be re-visited.
  • Next meeting bring any suggestions for speakers and/or topics for future meetings.

  • Beltana still looks promising.

Repeaters well used for JOTA.

Re-activating St Andrews College Radio Club was discussed with the following comments:

  1. Members willing to support it in principle, but CARDS does not have the personnel to do
  2. it alone.
  3. The availability of suitable people is limited. It could be a long-term commitment.
  4. A plan is needed stating the objectives and thought given to what we are trying to achieve.
  5. Does the school have a radio/tech course and would it fit in with that course?
  6. Is there a radio amateur on the staff?. Is the school interested and supportive?
  7. Other options such as a ‘weekend’ course towards Amateur license, or Branch 05 radio/tech course being held at the school. Also suggested were ISS contacts and ATV.

September 2015

  • 5625 is going OK.
  • Beltana looking more positive.
  • Echolink has power quality problems.
  • Moving IRLP to ZL3MJS’s QTH was discussed but first needs to be encased.
  • ZL3AB reported on the Council planning meeting he and Richard
    ZL4FZ attended. While it was a positive meeting it will be four to six weeks before anything further is known.
  • There was a brief discussion about antennas and resource consent.
    JOTA: Mike Frobisher is again running it from Malvern (Rugby) Park, and will include IRLP and D-Star. Supporters would be welcome.
  • The meeting concluded with a presentation from ZL3AB similar to the one he gave at the recent WestFest.

August 2015

  • Recent glitches in IRLP were due to a power cut.
  • ZL3LF keeps an eye on Echolink.
  • D-Star and DMR were discussed briefly.
  • The submissions were explained and discussed further, and proposed heights and dimensions were evaluated.
  • ZL3AB interested members explaining about his trial with Linux on Windows XP.
  • JOTA involvement was discussed without any conclusions.
    EastFest and 2016 Conference were also discussed.

July 2015

  • A trip to Cass Peak is mooted.
  • ZL3AB thanked all those who sent submissions on the district plan.
  • Hearings will be done by chapter, radio clubs being chapter 11.
  • ZL3AB led a brief explanation and discussion on the mis- information about a coming mini ice age and solar flares.
  • ZL3DRC spoke about his use of FSQ Call.

June 2015

  • Still working, including IRLP and Echolink.
  • None to note.
  • ZL2BCF gave a talk on Surveillance Systems in Aviation. The comments and questions following his presentation indicated the interest and appreciation of those present.

May 2015

  • ZL2BCF reported there is a temporary diamond antenna at Cass Peak until the proposed mounting gets Airways’ approval.
  • ZL4FZ is looking at replacing 680 Tekapo with a commercial antenna for 6-2m link.
  • ZL3TJM expressed concern at the pulsing on 640. Problem and solutions were discussed.
  • ZL3TMB reported that IRLP is working.
  • Following the letter from Br 56 the question of changing our meeting venue was aired.

After discussion it was decided –

  • It was decided that the CARDS meetings will be held at Br 05 club rooms and that we pay for the four months use of Auburn Park to date. Secretary to advise Br 56.
  • There was much interest in ZL3AB’s description of his Fiji visit, use of Sota pole and FT4500, and his radio contacts from Fiji.
  • ZL3TOY offered some Power Pole connectors. The whereabouts of the crimping tool was queried.
  • ZL3AB mentioned his involvement over the new antenna height regulations, which were discussed briefly.

April 2015

  • Cass Peak antenna will be stabilized when access and personnel available.
  • Extraneous bits for 23cm were offered by ZL3TOY and ZL2BCF.
  • ZL3TOY commented on his nine contacts over twelve hours in the
    recent Low Band contest.
  • Items discussed included Break In remits and inquiries regarding former members not heard from lately.

March 2015

  • 6m was discussed but no news yet on progress for a 6m antenna at Cass Peak.
  • ZL3NK reports that IRLP is going well.
  • ZL3TOY reported via e-mail on information re the antennas at Colonial Knob maintained by the Wellington VHF group. Their opinion is that no antenna over 1.5 metres will survive the winds.
  • The most reliable one they have used is the Diamond X50.
    Rubber mounting is a must and yearly maintenance required.
  • There was discussion on commercial antennas, including whips. ZL3MJS to follow up.
  • Change of meeting venue – Br 05 lease still needs finalizing with
    minor issues to be resolved. Cheque for room rental was not handed over tonight because the Br 56 member was not present.
    Combined Branches meeting was evidently not well attended. Next one will be the last.
  • ZZL3TIV has re-visited the Balmoral site referred to in the November 2014 minutes. He suggested it would be perfect for a solar site.

February 2015

  • Antenna has the same fault as the previous one of the same make. Different mounting solutions are being looked at. There was discussion re possibilities and suggestions to improve the stability.
  • ZL2BCF had some photos showing the new hand rail and possible mounting sites.
  • ZL3TMB explained plans for a PRS duplexer on Marleys Hill.
  • It was decided that CARDS apply to a charity for money to fund a PRS repeater.

November 2014

  • ZL2BCF reported that Br 56 contribution towards the repeater antenna was due to be paid this Friday.
  • A trip up the hill is planned as soon as mutually convenient to check mountings since the new handrails have been installed.
  • Comment was made that 850 seemed weaker than formerly.
  • IRLP is back on 2metres.
  • Pi is still not performing consistently. ZL3TOY will get it checked to see what the problem is.
  • ZL3TIV had been in the Balmoral area and discovered the old fire tower which is now part of a farm property. He showed us pictures of the tower ( on a knoll similar in height to Sugarloaf), access track, etc and raised the possibility of exploring further for amateur radio coverage.
  • ZL3TOY spoke briefly about his D-Star acquisition.
  • Meeting venue options were discussed at some length following the proposed increase in rent for Br 56 clubrooms. Options to think about were other venues such as Branch 05, Papanui RSA,
    McDonalds, or continue at Br 56 in the meantime until we know what Br 05 would charge and when their lease would be finalized. ZL2BCF offered to let Br 56 committee know that we are looking seriously at other venues because of the increase in rental and our small number of financial members.

October 2014

  • Insurance with change of ownership, ZL3AB will contact NZART
    secretary/manager to clarify responsibility.
  • ZL3MJS demonstrated what had caused the HR2000 antenna problem and explained what changes and improvements are in hand to make it more robust. He is to be reimbursed by CARDS for his expenditure.
  • ZL3TOY reports two new users on 6m.
  • JOTA: There will be a station at Wairakei School this coming weekend.
  • ZL3TMB requested two helpers for the Off Road Club event at Labour Weekend.
  • ZL3AB demonstrated his new antenna analyzer.
  • Club rooms venues and rental costs were discussed. ZL3TMB will inquire about rent for Br 05 rooms and report back next meeting.

September 2014

  • 2m and 6m ‘disappeared’, ZL2BCF is investigating. Radials are on order.
  • 840 is OK.
  • 23cm is still awaiting arrangements and quote re pole.
  • ZL3MJS is awaiting word on Beltana.
  • Short comments re repeaters and Charities status.

August 2014

  • Advice from Greg is to leave 840 for twelve months. In the meantime he will endorse 23cm to Marleys Hill.
  • Echolink is still with ZL3LF.
  • ZL3TMB reports some progress with IRLP.
  • ZL3TOY reports Raspberry Pi still not stable. It goes for a day then the computer crashes.
  • JOTA: ZL3TO gave a progress report and will find out what the Scouting groups have planned for 18/19 October and where.
  • ZL3TIV explained the workings of his lemonade-making machine
    and members were able to sample the result.
  • ZL3TIV talked about his latest project.
  • ZL3AB then gave an excellent presentation on his Funcube Dongle and SDR receiver as a panadapter for his Kenwood TS2000.

July 2014

  • ZL3TOY shared information re access to Marley’s Hill site.
    Beltana site is looking more positive.
  • Permission has been obtained to lengthen radials at Cass Peak.
    ZL3TJM reported on the interference on 850, which is evident at times but below our part of the band.
  • Repeater account will be due in October.
  • It was decided that the Treasurer have the authority to pay repeater accounts as they arrive.
  • ZL3TOY has the VHF/UHF 36R at his QTH as ZL3TX is on the
    move for earthquake repairs. The suggestion of selling it was raised but left open meantime.
  • Reserve land at Rolleston as possible site for amateur radio use was discussed but deemed not economically viable, apart from the distance from the city.

June 2014

Repeaters: All performing well, including the new antenna.

  • ZL3TMB reports that IRLP works on simplex at his QTH.
  • Trustees to have further discussion re new radials for the antenna at Cass Peak.
  • Storeroom tidy-up was suggested.
  • There was discussion concerning the use of digital technology. ZL2BCF will float suggestions with Branch 56 and report back.
  • Beltana possibilities were also discussed. ZL3TMB to work on costings. He will also let ZL4FZ have a copy of his former Form 10 for 23cm so that a new one can be submitted.

May 2014

  • Echolink- ZL3LS has been in communication with ZL3TOY
    ZL3TOY and all is well at present.
  • There are problems with Rasp pi after it has run for a few days. ZL3TOY is in discussion with ZL3LS over possible solutions.
  • The occasional noise on 840 is still being traced with some likely leads.
  • Request for a spare HF radio for ZL3DRC due to his TS430S having a mishap.
  • ZL3AB reported on a recent competition honoring an Australian Amateur who lived till age 109. The sprint runs for just 109 minutes.
    Reminiscences of past amateur related experiences concluded the meeting.

  • Trip to Cass Peak is planned for the coming weekend to change the
    V2000 antenna and check the duplexers and UHF port. Lightening strike is the suspected cause of recent problems.

March 2014

Repeaters: nothing has changed.

  • The source of faint pulsing on the National System is being investigated by ZL4FZ.
  • IRLP to be set up by ZL3TOY, but will need a change of Call sign to ZL3CAR.
  • Mailing address to be changed to the QTH of ZL3AB. Sec. to notify
    NZART, CARDS members and Ministry of Commerce.
  • Break In magazine and alternatives were discussed.
  • An inquiry came from AREC re the use of 5625/680 for genuine emergencies. Members agreed for it to be followed up with a written letter from ZL4FZ before contacting Timaru.
  • Attendance at Combined Branches has dropped. The present format of combining it with the host branch’s general meeting will continue three more times then be evaluated.
  • Consensus was that CARDS does not need a newsletter.
  • The recent death of Bert Wise ZL3ADL was noted, as was his help in Branch 56 getting the present club rooms.

February 2014

  • 850 repeater is sorted. The previous antenna has had lightning surges and requires changing the capacitors to high voltage ones.
  • There may also be problems with the duplexer or
    triplexer. ZL4FZ is looking into it.
  • Echolink is still at ZL3LF’s QTH.
  • Mainly discussion on various topics including field days, component sources, plasma interference on 80m, Coast to Coast and open source digital radio.
  • ZL3TIV was congratulated on becoming a grandfather.

November 2013

  • Echolink is still at ZL3LF’s.
  • ZL3TMB reports he is searching through his boxes for the IRLP radio packed for his recent QTH move.
  • 23cm: Details are now to hand for Form 10.
  • 850 found to be not working. Trustees discussed possible Cass Peak trip.
  • There was general discussion, including suggestions following a coax question from ZL3DRC.
  • At the conclusion of the meeting David ZL3AI gave a demonstration of SARTrack Top50 file which created a lot of interest and discussion.
  • December BBQ will be at Rutland Street on 14th December.

October 2013

  • Echolink is at ZL3LF’s and will be used for JOTA in the coming weekend.
  • Available time is preventing Raspberry Pi getting sorted.
  • 23cm – ZL3TMB needs information from ZL3MJS for Form 10.
  • ZL3TOY told of his use of Raspberry Pi.
  • JOTA was discussed. There is no official JOTA this year though several members are helping with HF and JOTI at various locations.
  • ZL3TX suggested planning needs to be for a year ahead to get some momentum and have gear ready and functioning. This year there has been significant lack of information.

September 2013.

  • Echolink computer needs replacing.
  • 5625 still functioning after recent big wind.
  • ZL3TOY reported there has not been a lot of traffic on 850.
  • JOTA/JOTI was discussed. Possibility CARDS could assist Branch 05.
  • ZL3TX may have more information re what is planned with the Scouts.
  • ZL3MJS explained SAR testing of antennas and their placement coming up next weekend.
  • Branch 56 sale on 5 October was noted.
  • ZL3AB alerted members to the coming Oceania DX contest on first and second weekends in October (Branch 56 clubrooms) and explained procedure and logging SYSTEMS.

August 2013.

  • 23cm printout to be checked by ZL4FZ then copied for ZL3TMB to follow up Form 10.
  • Raspberry Pi is on its way to ZL3TMB.
  • Cass Peak annual check-up last Saturday. ZL2BCF, ZL4FZ, and ZL3MJS found the antenna was loose at its base due to vibration, screws are now tight.
  • 6m sensitivity was increased. 850 Tekapo receiver was made slightly ‘deafer’.
  • 850 remained the same.
  • 10m  is in ZL3TMB’s shed.
  • 385 has “swish’ noise on it when transmitting. Possible sources were discussed. The antenna is in good condition.
  • Weather station: no word from ZL3TCK
  • PO Box: ZL3MJS reported that the small discount for charitable organizations did not warrant retaining it for CARDS.
  • There was discussion on a variety of topics including D-STAR repeaters and computer systems.

July 2013.

  • ZL3TMB has found an old copy of Form 10 for 23cm repeater but needs some details from ZL3MJS.
  • ZL3TMB advised that the present IRLP computer is beyond further use. Raspberry Pi (PiRLP) as an alternative was explained and discussed at some length. It was decided that CARDS go ahead to replace  the IRLP node with Raspberry Pi at tentative cost of $400NZ, plus or minus variations in freight and exchange rates.
  • The consensus was that when this is up and running then attention can be given to Echo link. ZL3TMB will return the Echolink PC to ZL3MJS. Echolink has a temporary home at present.
  • 840 interference was discussed. Phone line needs sorting. Those involved are aware of problem and continue to investigate solutions.
  • 10m is at ZL3TMB’s QTH, he will locate it before next meeting.
  • CARDS PO Box address is in ZL3MJS’s name at present. 
  • It was decided that ZL3MJS investigate change of ownership of his PO box to CARDS and report back at the next meeting.
  • The weather station has been re-discovered. ZL3TMB will locate the board for it.
  • It was decided that ZL3TCK set up the weather station at his QTH.
  • ZL3NK showed his newly purchased Noise Cancelling Signal Enhancer and ZL3TIV produced some small solar panels which created interest.
  • ZL3TIV’s gave a presentation on Mesh network systems.

July 2012.

  • IRLP and Echolink are now back in action.
  • Marley’s Hill antenna pole alternative suggested, further investigation needed.
  • It was decided that a donation of $150 be paid to Branch 56.
  • IRLP and Echolink are now housed at the QTH of ZL3MJS.
  • ZL3TMB keeps in touch with Br 05 re Marley’s Hill. He will action Form 10. Suitable antennas were discussed. The decision was to try the V6000 and see how it handles the wind there.

PK1 Project:

The gear is at hand. Next meeting the plan is to put it all together so that weight and size are known to enable parachute requirement to be worked out. Members are reminded to bring all the bits to the next meeting.

June 2012.

  • IRLP is at its new home awaiting connection..
  • No action to date re Branch 05 pole on Marleys. Alternative solutions were discussed.
  • ZL3TMB will forward Form 10 for 23cm.
  • Science Alive!  is regarded as a write-off as access to tower would be impossible.
  • ZL3AB reported successful DX contacts with Corsica, Geneva and Sudan.
  • ZL3TMB All still OK. 3850 gets locked up with noise from Mt Studholm.
  • PK1 Project was discussed at some length. The decision is to get the box organised with the equipment running before worrying about the balloon. Members are asked to alert ZL3AB if suitable (cheap) Android or I-phone is seen on Trade-me.

  • ZL3AB showed recently received ZL3M cards and the CQWW DX Certificate for 1st place SSB contest.
  • ZL3TMB All OK. 5625 reported to have performed well recently in the Arthurs Pass area.
  • 6m triggering – no remedial action in the mean time.
  • IRLP possibility for new home mooted.
  • 23cm awaits decision from Br 05 re replacement/re-siting pole on Marleys. Form 10 not going ahead until pole situation is clearer.

  • Marley’s Hill visit took place end of March.

  • Marley’s trip investigated cabling. Feed up to pole appears good but the pole itself is suspect. Branch 05 to get pole checked.
  • IRLP off air at present.
  • PK1: ZL3TOY has sourced camera. There was brief discussion of camera/transmitter options and trial with payload.
  • ZL3TMB reported on Marley’s Hill trip.

  • ZL3TOY will look out for a suitable camera for PK1 project.

February 2012.

  • Repeaters all working. 6m gets ‘upset’ during the day, possibly due to inter-mod interference though no problem evident with voice usage.
  • Thursday night nets are going really well and Tuesday 2m SSB nets are also continuing. Reflector reminders are now back in place.
  • 2m antenna has been changed and now has a better base which seems to be more stable even in windy conditions.
  • ZL3TOY initiated discussion re the feasibility of a regular weather station report on 2m.
  • 23cm and Beltana: no action.
  • Access to Science Alive! is needed to retrieve equipment before demolition.

PK1 Project:

ZL3AB had no response to his e-mail. He will try to find a suitable camera. Suggested contacts for information were ZL3ROD (balloons etc) and Kelvin (GPS). Next step will be to figure out a design and decide what the first launch will contain. Needs keep it as simple as possible.

  • Field Weekend- CARDS members can support other participating branches eg 05 or 68.
  • Combined Branches Forum 26 March, CARDS are hosts at Auburn Park.
  • ZL3AB has received from Russia the ZL3M contest QSL cards. Method of payment was discussed, Mark will follow up.
  • A DVD of “The Last Big Field Day” was watched by the group.

  • Visit being arranged for the coming weekend to change antenna.
  • 70cm going OK.
  • 23cm ZL3TMB is waiting to hear back from Br 05 committee.
  • It was decided that CARDS apply for grant money for a cavity filter for the PRS repeater.
  • There was brief discussion of PK1 project, ZL3TIV showing what he was contributing.
  • The problems of ‘interference’ on 6m were discussed and solutions suggested. A trial net on 6m repeater was arranged for 8pm Thursday nights. A reminder is to go on yahoo group reflector.
  • Attention was drawn to Eastfest information on Br 56 notice board.

July 2011.

Repeaters:

  • There is still noise on 5625 repeater, a trip is being arranged.
  • ZL3TMB had received an inquiry from a VK operator as to whether IRLP node was working (which it is). Echolink is working OK.
  • ZL3MJS, ZL3TMB and ZL3AG have visited the 705 repeater and we viewed the pictures they took in reference to the proposed 1296 repeater  being sited there. CARDS have the equipment and the space is there.  The frequency has already been allocated to CARDS some time ago. Two options will be presented to Branch 05 for their consideration.

PK1 Project:

ZL3TIV is to let ZL3AB know the weight of the equipment he has offered.

  • Contest callsign: ZL3AB will explore the possibility of a change from ZL3M to ZL3X.
  • QSL card picture of the New Brighton pier will be shown on the CARDS reflector.
  • Branch 05’s predicament over being red-stickered was discussed. Ideas could be further explored at September Combined Branches Forum.
  • Thanks to ZL3TOY for supplying delicious pumpkin soup and bread rolls.

June 2011.

Repeaters:

  • ZL3TMB All still working. 5625 crackle more noticeable in windy conditions. Change of antenna with the repaired one ZL3MJS has is anticipated.
  • 6m turning off was discussed and explained.
  • ZL3TOY commented on PRS ch 6 Mt Grey.
  • CARDS has purchased the pink 2m handheld for the PK1 project.
  • Marley’s Hill visit planned for 25 or 26 June, day to be arranged.

 PK1 Project:

ZL3AB weighed and recorded the items that were available.

A special general meeting was held to amend the constitution.

May 2011.

  • Repeaters ZL3TMB reported all good.
  • There were remarks about 6m having been “up” for the whole week.
  • ZL3AG commented about possible extensions of National System to Westport.
  • ZL3MJS read from ZL3TNT’s Councillor’s comments re Kordia not charging rental after the end of June for Amateur equipment on their sites.
  • Spectrum policing was discussed briefly.
  • ZL3AB has received QSL cards from the Oceania contest and suggested CARDS need to get some printed. He will proceed once he gets the photos.
  • ZL3M licence is due for renewal in Sept. CARDS, being the only entry in the multiple contest, look likely to win it.

PK1 Project:

Time was taken to discuss ways and means and the equipment needed. Winter is a good time for lift-off. Various members offered gear and contacts for information. Helium is already available.  It was decided that CARDS purchase a Chinese 2m handheld radio’s. Next meeting members are asked to bring the equipment and suitable containers if any so that all can be assessed for weight, size, etc. ready for the first flight, payload up to 500g.

The AGM will be held in July as a motion will be needed at a Special General Meeting to amend our constitution which is due for revision.

April 2011.

  • 840 noise – ZL3TMB spoke to ZL3IX, the noise has been reduced somewhat but not entirely unfortunately.
  • Eion reported that the 5625 noises are due to 680 being locked up due to a pair of nearby ESB P25 channels being 600kHz apart. The problem was cured by moving one P25 channel by 25kHz.
  • ZL3MJS told us that the Branch 56 clubrooms have cracks that need fixing and are seeking donations for repairs to be carried out. ZL3TOY moved that we donate $250 to Branch 56, seconded by ZL3AG, carried.

PK1 Balloon Project:

We discussed various payload options. Helium can be obtained from Canterbury University at a reasonable price.

March 2011.

Repeaters:

ZL3TMB to check what is causing  840 noise problem triggering it.

PRS awaits RSM decision (due 1 May) re distance between repeaters.

Combined Branches meeting 28 March at Branch 56 Clubrooms.

PK1Project:

ZL3DMC used his computer wizardry to show the pertinent web-sites as circulated to members via CARDS yahoo group. ZL3AB explained the relevant information they contained. There was much interest and discussion as to materials, costs, etc. Information gathering is proceeding.

ZL3TIV offered suggestions regarding emergency traffic via a short-term repeater if 7050 repeater was on battery power. Members felt that 5625 would be reliable and recalled the 1972 snow when 146.600 simplex was used  in North Canterbury with good coverage.

February 2011

Repeaters:

  • ZL3TMB planning  to contact Rob Thirkettle soon  re visit to Marleys Peak.
  • 23cm beacon is up and running. IRLP is working well.

Marlborough Radio Club (Blenheim) has donated $250 for assistance in the Silver Fern rally. Letter of thanks to be sent.

Jock White Field Day – no CARDS participation this year.

Project PK1 balloon suggested by ZL3AB evoked much lively discussion and enthusiasm. Fact finding re payload, materials, meteorology information, etc is to proceed, aiming at a springtime launch. It was decided that CARDS project for this year be a balloon with electronic payload.

November 2010.

PRS Repeater: Following discussion and concern at the $300 per year license fee it was agreed that ZL3AI be detailed to inquire from RSM re the possibility of the Marleys Hill site.

  • ZL3AB reported on the CQ World wide contest in October.
  • ZL3M is now in the log-book of the World. 
  • CARDS web site has been up-dated, thanks to ZL3AB.
  • ZL3TOY is to re-open dialogue re the Mt Hutt site. Space is available but lack of a usable power supply could be an issue.
  • ZL3AG told of interesting contacts on 144.23 using sideband.

Following expressions of interest it was decided to  trial a net next

Tuesday 23rd November @ 2000 hours on 144.2 USB.

October 2010.

  • The 5625 antenna is working well since its ‘heart transplant’.
  • ZL3MJS has photos of the Oceania contest held at his QTH.

  • Repeaters ZL3TMB: All working. Marleys Hill test still to come.

JOTA (ZL3TX): Lack of helpers due to lack of reminders. ZL3TX having problems with yahoo e-mails.  He will attend Scout Association meeting next month.

There was animated discussion re Fred Johnson and NZART following which it was moved that CARDS write to NZART Council expressing our society’s dissatisfaction with the activities of Mr Fred Johnson ZL2AMJ.

September 2010.

Oceania contest 2-3 October 9pm –9pm at Rutland St. There was a scarcity of response to ZL3AB who renewed his request for expressions of interest in the coming week. ZL3DMC suggested a ‘trial run’ the weekend before. BBQ will fire up from mid-day Sunday. ZL3AB will get a callsign  and reminded members of the need for QSL cards. ZL3MJS was ‘volunteered’ to design same.

Repeaters: ZL3TMB stated the antenna on 5625 is not well. Trustees plan a visit tomorrow Thursday 16th to replace the old one.

  • Branch 05 has no objection to linking with 23cm. Trustees will have a look and check co-ax measurements. Form 10 will follow recovery of site.
  • Science Alive! ZL3MJS reports that the tower brick veneer is cracked, concrete inside may be OK. Time will tell. 
  • PRS: ZL3TOY reports PS1 has closed down.
  • JOTA (ZL3TX) Oct 16-17, set up on the Friday.This year there will be a demonstration station at Cotswold Primary School. 200-300 young people are expected to be present. ZL3MJS offered to organize a cherry picker.
  • Combined Branches meeting 27th Sept.at Branch 05 club rooms.

August 2010.

Repeaters: ZL3TMB – all working as they should. Echolink  still waiting.

  • ZL4PLM described  progress with his 3cm beacon and explained his slotted wave-guide vertical antenna. Next step once the crystals have aged in about two months is to find a suitable site for it.
  • No progress with PRS, The repeater is tuned for Ch 3 but no site found.
  • 23cm: Br 05 repeater trustees and committee see no objection to it being on Marleys Hill. ZL3TMB will confer with Rob ZL3RX and organize Form 10.
  • Mark ZL3AB reported that the contest site owner had gone quiet. Mark will persist in his attempts to get a reply from the DOC member at Godley Head. Interest was shown and plans made for the Oceania contest on 2 Oct.
  • It was decided that CARDS apply for a contest call sign.
  • ZL4PLM led discussion on beacons and propagation sites and the need for a proper beacon strategy for the South Island.
  • Silver Fern rally would benefit from helpers 14 Nov (Show weekend).

July 2010

Repeaters: ZL3TMB reports all OK.

  • A home for the 23cm repeater was discussed and will need further discussion with Br 05 committee.Suggestion was a simple installation for starters and see if it gets going with more people using it.
  • It was decided that ZL3TMB proceed with seeking the opinion of Br 05 committee and report back.
  • ZL3TOY gave a run-down on some of the findings from his Questionnaire re Break-In which stimulated discussion on some ways of changing the appeal and costs. ZL3TOY will follow up with Lorna Douglas.
  • ZL3TOY reported on the PRS 1 group’s suggestion that they provide the equipment for a PRS repeater if CARDS provided the site and paid the annual license ($300). This generated lengthy discussion and alternative suggestions including pictures of the Shine TV site.
  • It was decided that CARDS proceed with a feasibility study for installing PRS at Marleys Hill.
  • Contest site. ZL3AB has located a suitable site near Amberley whose owner is keen to host a contest spot. The site is in a very quiet location and no permits are needed, only a call-sign and necessary equipment which could be stored on the site. Expressions of interest were forthcoming.
  • ZL3AB will find out more and present findings next meeting. 

June 2010.

Repeaters: No change. 5625 to be monitored as it may have antenna problem more noticeable in high winds.

  • ZL3TOY had a questionnaire re Break-In magazine.
  • The anticipated Beacon site is not available for the present.
  • ZL3NB reported on the interference problems he has experienced from non-compliant import laptop battery chargers.
  • ZL3MJS gave us an up-date on his antenna saga.
  • The group saw some pictures from conference and a very amusing video on aspects of fishing in the US thanks to ZL3DMC.

May 2010.

Repeaters: ZL3TMB reported recent activity on 6m. IRLP is “doing OK”.

Echolink still awaiting attention.

  • Proposed sale of KR500 elevation rotator to Tony ZL3HAM was approved by members. (Controller to be retained)
  • ZL3TMB explained the emergence of a techno-club for youngsters that Kelvin at Br 05 is running. CARDS agreed to support this project. Ways of combining with Buildathon were mooted. Finance will be a factor of importance.
  • ZL2BCF had received an e-mail from Mike Foubister re IOTA,  the internet version of JOTA, and the possibility of combining with JOTA. Doug has replied. ZL3GH has an unused tracker he is willing to donate to ZL3TX for JOTA activities.
  • Feasibility of building our own fox-hunting gear was discussed and members asked to think about the possibilities.
  • ZL3GH generated discussion seeking ideas for using TMA100 for testing aerials among other possibilities.
  • ZL2BCF saw no objection to CARDS using kitchen facilities for hot drinks after meetings.
  • ZL3AB described and illustrated his 80/40 antenna.

April 2010

Repeaters:  still going including IRLP. Suggestion re linking all repeaters to 2m, including 6m and 70cm using a controller, is worth consideration but the cost of commands needs taking into account.

Future venue for combined branches meetings was discussed. Suggestions were

i. That Timaru’s wishes be ascertained at the next meeting

ii. Rotation gives a chance to meet other people compared with ‘same venue same people’.

iii. Look at alternative times

iv. Add Timaru to the roster

The overall conclusion was that CARDS suggest to the next combined Branches meeting that Timaru be included in the rotation but the venue be at Ashburton when Timaru would be the hosts. Thus Ashburton would be the venue twice in a three-year cycle.

  • Ann ZL3TNT as NZART Councillor spoke briefly and answered questions. This was followed by discussion on council’s future. Remits have to be in by the end of Dec 2010 which means changes need to be planned from now on.
  • ZL3AB answered some queries re constitutions.
  • ZL3TOY up-dated members on his search for a repeater beacon site. Looking interesting but power may be an issue. Solar panel could be considered. He hopes to know more at the end of the month.
  • Science Alive!: ZL3MJS has a meeting with Neville Petrie Thurs 22. Members agreed to keep our interest in the clock tower site alive.
  • A lively discussion was held and the suggestion we ask Br 56  if CARDS could use the kitchen facilities to make a cuppa after our meetings.

March 2010.

Repeaters: ZL3TMB – All going. 6m now on low power, awaiting attention.

IRLP is up and running again but not Echolink yet.

  • Godley Head not looking promising as no response to ZL3AB’s attempts to contact DOC person.
  • In reply to a question re Omaka ZL3TX said the problem is lack contact from scouting folk and the shortage of volunteers to up-grade the camp-site.
  • Science Alive!  and its future were discussed. The suggestion was to check with key person whether CARDS are still welcome, retrieve or re-establish equipment accordingly.
  • (NB  ZL3TX’s 10m aerial is there)
  • Eyrewell Tower. Liabilities and insurance if  going to site at a weekend were unanswered questions. Co-originating a time to suit volunteers sometimes difficult.
  • Future Projects: ATV gear in ZL3TX’s garage could be put to good use at guide/scout camps etc. Foxes need up-dating as the old NZART gear is UN-reliable and frustrating for the users.
  • ZL2BCF suggested that if CARDS were having a guest  speaker for a meeting it could be made known in QTC.
  • A lively discussion on a variety of topics, including the future of NZART and Break-In.

February 2010

Repeaters: Echolink and IRLP are still awaiting re site-ing and re-organizing of shack.

Problem with 6m still getting turned off . Members offered  to help ZL3TMB if needed.

  • Field Day. Br 56 not participating this year but Br 05 and Br 68 will be.
  • Club room use donation – Br 56 suggested an increase in CARDS contribution.
  • It was decided that CARDS increase our donation for the use of the clubrooms to $150 a year.
  • Attention was drawn to the opening of a new Ham shop called Signals at 10 Birmingham Drive that has Yaesu equipment.
  • Science Alive! site: ZL3MJS to follow up the visit made by ZL3TMB and ZL3CH.
  • CARDS future use of the site needs clarification.

Members were then treated to an excellent presentation by Simon ZL4PLM on microwave communications and beacons, which was received with much interest.

ZL3MJS formally thanked  Simon. It was decided that CARDS look for a suitable ‘home’ for a 10GHz narrow band beacon.
